Why SMEs Use of Cloud Computing Is Increasing

Edited by Ingo Becker

Has cloud computing arrived in mid-sized companies? In the study ‘German SMEs on cloud 7?‘* this question was dedicated by software company forcont business technology with the Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin (University of Economics and Law Berlin; HWE). Accordingly, the number of those who presently use cloud computing – or want to use it in the future – is growing steadily.

Pervasive SaaS Due To Rise Of Mobile Work

Four of five companies surveyed use or offer software as a service solutions (SaaS). In an earlier survey two years ago, 20 percent could not answer the question of using Saas applications with certainty. In addition, in 2015 Saas applications in communications and business collaboration took priority.

In the recent study (2017), cloud storage comes first with 68 percent. Nine of ten respondents now cite the increased importance of mobile work for the use of Saas solutions. This makes mobile work the most popular reason for introducing cloud-based software. About 10 percent said that user-friendliness is a major reason for adoption.

Data Security Remains Obstacle

On data security are still addressed very high demands. More than 90 percent of those who do not use cloud solutions fear a lack of security vs 2015 by 60 percent. For users the topic of data security loses its importance compared to the demand for stable performance. It is also becoming increasingly important that a SaaS solution can be well integrated into the currently running IT landscape.

The challenge of costs as well as satisfying support by the provider is viewed more critically. According to the study, businesses are increasingly concerned about whether employees working with SaaS are open to new technologies.
